As the new school year approaches, children everywhere look forward to choosing a new backpack, opening fresh notebooks, and walking into their classrooms excited for the year ahead.
But for thousands of children in Israel, that excitement is overshadowed by a difficult reality.
Many families are struggling just to afford life’s basic necessities. With the rising cost of living and the ongoing economic impact of the war, purchasing a new backpack and essential school supplies has become an impossible expense for parents who are already doing everything they can to provide for their children.
No child should begin the school year feeling different because of financial hardship.

That is why Chasdei Naomi launched A Backpack for Every Child, a project dedicated to ensuring that children from low-income families begin the school year with a brand-new backpack filled with essential school supplies.
Why This Project Matters
The inspiration for this initiative comes from the personal story of Rabbi Yosef Cohen, Founder and President of Chasdei Naomi.
As a child, Rabbi Cohen went to school carrying his books in a plastic bag because his family could not afford a backpack. Many days, a simple margarine sandwich was all he had for lunch.
Those experiences never left him.
Today, they continue to inspire a project that gives children facing similar hardships the opportunity to begin the school year with dignity and hope.
At a time when socioeconomic gaps continue to widen, A Backpack for Every Child helps level the playing field by ensuring that children have the same opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed as their classmates.
Providing a child with a new backpack and quality school supplies does far more than prepare them for school. It gives them confidence, helps them feel included, and allows parents to use their limited resources to cover other essential household expenses.
What's Inside Every Backpack?
At the heart of the project is a brand-new, high-quality backpack chosen by the student from a selection of styles.
Each backpack is filled with the essential supplies children need for a successful school year, including:
- A multi-compartment pencil case
- Pencils, markers, highlighters, an eraser, and a pencil sharpener
- Notebooks in a variety of colors for different subjects
- A reusable water bottle
- A snack for the first day of school
Every item is brand new because every child deserves to begin the school year with pride and confidence.
