SHARING THE WARMTH OF ROSH HASHANAH WITH ELDERLY PEOPLE AND HOLOCAUST SURVIVORS

Rosh Hashanah is a time for family, tradition, and sharing a festive meal around the table. It is a time when we welcome the New Year with hope, good food, and the warmth of those around us.

But for some elderly people and Holocaust survivors, enjoying a traditional holiday meal is not always something they can take for granted.

This Rosh Hashanah, Chasdei Naomi made sure that residents of Beit Gil Hazahav in Beit Shemesh could experience the warmth and joy of the holiday.

The organization’s teams prepared and distributed special holiday meals for the residents, with each meal carefully packed into carry bags so that they could take them back to their rooms or enjoy them in the dining room.

A HOT HOLIDAY MEAL, PREPARED WITH CARE

The meals included both fish and meat, along with vegetables, rice, and bread — providing the residents with a generous and nourishing holiday meal.

Every meal was prepared and packed with care, because a holiday meal is about more than simply having something to eat.

It is about being able to celebrate.

It is about sitting down to a meal that feels special.

And it is about knowing that someone cared enough to make sure you had what you needed for the holiday.

When you give an elderly person a holiday meal, you are giving them more than food.

You are telling them:

“We are thinking of you. You matter to us. You are not alone.”

Sometimes, a warm meal, a smile, and a caring gesture can mean more than words can express.

BRINGING THE SWEETNESS OF ROSH HASHANAH

Chasdei Naomi also wanted the residents to enjoy some of the traditional flavors associated with Rosh Hashanah.

Along with their meals, residents received bags filled with holiday favorites, including dates, honey, grape juice, pomegranates, and honey cookies.

These familiar foods are part of the traditions that make Rosh Hashanah so special. They bring sweetness to the holiday and help create the feeling of celebration.

For the residents of Beit Gil Hazahav, these gifts were about more than the food itself.

They were a reminder that they were remembered and that others wanted them to enjoy a meaningful and festive New Year.

WHEN THE COST OF LIVING MAKES A HOLIDAY MEAL A LUXURY

The rising cost of living and food prices in Israel can place an additional burden on elderly people living on limited incomes.

After paying for housing, bills, medications, and other necessities, there may be very little left for food.

For some, fresh produce, meat, and fish can become difficult to afford. Preparing a generous holiday meal can feel like an impossible expense.

That is why providing a festive meal during Rosh Hashanah can mean so much.

It gives someone the opportunity to enjoy the holiday without having to worry about whether they can afford what is on the table.

It helps preserve something that is just as important as the food itself: dignity.

BEING THERE BEYOND THE HOLIDAYS

The Rosh Hashanah distribution at Beit Gil Hazahav was one example of the ongoing work carried out by Chasdei Naomi throughout the year.

The organization assists families, elderly people, and Holocaust survivors facing financial hardship across Israel.

Food packages, fresh produce, hot meals, clothing, shoes, and other essential items are distributed according to need.

But support is not always about what can be placed inside a package.

Sometimes, it is simply about being there.

A visit. A conversation. A helping hand. A smile. A few minutes spent listening.

For an elderly person who may feel alone, knowing that someone cares can make an enormous difference.

MAKING SURE NO ONE IS FORGOTTEN

Rosh Hashanah may have already passed, but the need does not end when the holiday does.

There are still elderly people, Holocaust survivors, and families across Israel who struggle to afford the food and necessities they need throughout the year.

At Beit Gil Hazahav in Beit Shemesh, Hasdei Naomi was able to bring warmth and joy to residents during Rosh Hashanah through a hot holiday meal, traditional holiday foods, and a simple but meaningful reminder that they had not been forgotten.

Because sometimes the greatest gift is not something that can be placed in a bag.

It is the feeling of being cared for, respected, and remembered.

Behind every meal and every package distributed by Hasdei Naomi is a simple belief:

Everyone deserves to be treated with dignity, and no one should have to feel alone.
